Pets are often described as members of the family, a phrase that captures the affection many people feel toward animals living in their homes. Yet the comparison is not as simple as it first appears. Human family members can express preferences, argue about rules, and eventually leave to build independent lives. Pets, by contrast, depend on people for food, shelter, medical care, and access to the outside world. This dependence makes the relationship emotionally close, but it also creates an imbalance of power. The central question, then, is not merely why people love pets, but what responsibilities arise when affection is combined with control.
One reason people value pets is that animals can become part of everyday routines in ways that feel deeply personal. A dog waiting by the door or a cat sleeping near its owner may provide a sense of continuity that is difficult to measure. Such interactions can also change human behavior: people may walk more regularly, return home earlier, or structure their days around feeding and care. However, it would be misleading to treat pets simply as tools for improving human well-being. If an animal’s value is judged only by what it gives to people, the relationship becomes one-sided. Care requires attention to the animal’s needs even when doing so is inconvenient.
This becomes especially clear when human preferences conflict with animal behavior. Owners may want quiet, cleanliness, or constant companionship, while animals may need space, stimulation, exercise, or opportunities to behave in ways humans find annoying. Training can help animals live safely with people, but training also raises a question about whose comfort is being prioritized. A well-behaved pet is not necessarily a well-treated one if obedience is achieved by ignoring stress or limiting normal behavior. The challenge is to distinguish between guidance that supports coexistence and control that merely makes the animal easier to manage.
The same tension appears in choices about breeding and appearance. Humans often select pets according to size, color, temperament, or features they consider attractive. Yet preferences that seem harmless can have consequences if they encourage physical traits that make movement, breathing, or other ordinary functions more difficult. This does not mean that appearance should never matter to people choosing a pet. Rather, it suggests that aesthetic preference should be constrained by concern for the animal’s ability to live comfortably. In this sense, responsible ownership begins before an animal enters the home.
Another complication is that people often interpret animal behavior through human emotions. A pet that stays close may be described as loyal, while one that hides may be called jealous or guilty. Such interpretations can strengthen emotional bonds, but they can also be misleading. Animals certainly respond to people, yet their behavior does not always have the same meaning that similar behavior would have in a human relationship. Assuming too quickly that an animal thinks like a person may prevent owners from noticing other explanations, including fear, habit, or physical discomfort. Respect, therefore, sometimes requires resisting the temptation to make pets too human.
The relationship between pets and people is valuable partly because it crosses the boundary between species without erasing that boundary completely. Affection can motivate excellent care, but affection alone is not enough. Responsible companionship requires people to recognize both closeness and difference: pets can share homes and routines with humans while still having needs, perceptions, and forms of behavior that are not simply human versions of our own. The strongest relationship may therefore be one in which people do not ask animals to fit perfectly into human expectations, but instead adjust those expectations when the animal’s welfare requires it.
Q1. What does the passage suggest about choosing pets for appearance?
- Physical appearance should play no role when selecting pets.
- Human preferences should yield when they threaten animal well-being.
- Attractive features usually indicate that animals will live comfortably.
- Breeding choices matter mainly after animals enter human households.
Q2. Which view of training is most consistent with the passage?
- Successful training is demonstrated mainly by an animal’s obedience.
- Restricting natural behavior generally improves coexistence with human owners.
- Appropriate training balances shared living with the animal’s needs.
- Human convenience should determine which animal behaviors require correction.
Q3. Which statement is NOT supported by the passage?
- Human interpretations of pet behavior may overlook nonhuman explanations.
- Owners benefit most when pets satisfy their emotional expectations.
- Daily care of pets can reshape their owners’ routines.
- Good companionship sometimes requires humans to revise their expectations.

「aesthetic preference should be constrained by concern for the animal’s ability to live comfortably」という内容を,外見上の好みより動物の福祉を優先すべきだとまとめたものです。
本文は「responsible ownership begins before an animal enters the home」と述べており,繁殖や外見に関する責任は,動物を迎え入れる前から生じるとしています。
Q2
「guidance that supports coexistence」と「control that merely makes the animal easier to manage」を区別すべきだという本文の内容をまとめたものです。
1=第5段落
2=第2段落・第6段落
3=第2段落
4=第6段落
